Hair Loss & Scalp Health

Hair loss can be influenced by many different factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, stress, nutritional deficiencies, illness, medications, autoimmune conditions, inflammation, and scalp disorders. In many cases, more than one factor may be contributing at the same time. That is why we begin with a comprehensive evaluation rather than assuming there is one simple cause. By reviewing your scalp, hair-loss pattern, health history, lifestyle, and goals, we can better understand what may be contributing to your concerns and recommend the most appropriate next steps.
Common forms and contributing factors may include androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, traction alopecia, scalp inflammation or buildup, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal and postpartum changes, medical conditions, medications, and genetic predisposition. Because different forms of hair loss can appear similar, identifying patterns and contributing factors is an important part of determining the right path forward.
Consider scheduling an evaluation if you notice increased or prolonged shedding, a widening part, reduced density, more visible scalp, changes in your hairline, progressively finer or weaker hair, new areas of thinning or patchy loss, ongoing scalp discomfort, or hair changes following illness, hormonal shifts, medication changes, or significant stress. Early evaluation may provide more opportunities to support the scalp, protect existing hair, and address contributing factors before hair loss progresses.
Yes. Your scalp is living tissue and provides the environment in which your hair follicles function. Dryness, irritation, inflammation, excessive oil, buildup, and other imbalances can affect the comfort of your scalp and the appearance, strength, and resilience of your hair. Improving scalp health does not guarantee regrowth, but it can help create a healthier foundation for existing hair and appropriate hair-restoration therapies.
Scalp symptoms may be influenced by product buildup, excess oil production, dryness, irritation, environmental factors, hair-care habits, or an underlying scalp condition. Because similar symptoms can have different causes, choosing products through trial and error may not address what is actually happening. A scalp evaluation allows us to look more closely and recommend care based on your individual findings. When a concern appears to require medical diagnosis or treatment, we may recommend a dermatologist or another appropriate healthcare provider.

Trichology & the HVT Approach

Trichology is the specialized study of the hair and scalp. It combines an understanding of hair biology, scalp function, wellness, and hair-loss patterns to help identify factors that may be affecting the health and appearance of the hair. At Hudson Valley Trichology, we use this knowledge alongside advanced trichoscopic imaging, a comprehensive health review, personalized scalp care, and appropriate hair-restoration or hair-replacement solutions.
Dermatologists are medical doctors who diagnose and treat diseases of the skin, hair, and scalp. Trichologists specialize in evaluating hair and scalp concerns from a focused, nonmedical perspective. At HVT, we examine scalp and hair-loss patterns, review health and lifestyle factors, provide professional scalp care, recommend personalized home care, and offer non-surgical hair-restoration and hair-replacement solutions. Trichology does not replace dermatology. When we observe signs that may require medical diagnosis, testing, or treatment, we recommend collaboration with an appropriate medical provider.
Most providers focus on one type of solution. Hudson Valley Trichology offers a full spectrum of personalized care through three paths: REGROW supports clients who may be candidates for natural hair restoration; RESTORE focuses on improving scalp health, strengthening existing hair, and protecting the hair you already have; and REPLACE provides customized, non-surgical hair-replacement solutions when regrowth is not possible, is not enough, or is not the client’s preferred path. We do not begin by recommending a treatment or product. We begin by understanding you.
Yes. No two clients experience hair loss in exactly the same way, so no two care plans should be identical. Every recommendation is based on your individual scalp findings, hair-loss pattern, health history, lifestyle, maintenance preferences, and goals.
No. Our role is to educate you, explain your options, and recommend the path we genuinely believe is most appropriate for you. You will not be pressured into treatments you do not need or given a one-size-fits-all protocol.

Your Hair & Scalp Evaluation

Your evaluation may include a conversation about your hair-loss history and current concerns; a review of relevant health, lifestyle, stress, medication, and nutritional factors; an examination of your scalp and hair; advanced trichoscopic imaging; an evaluation of hair density, follicle condition, miniaturization, inflammation, oil production, and growth patterns; and a discussion of your goals and treatment preferences. The purpose is not simply to identify a product or treatment. It is to determine which path may be most appropriate for you.
Trichoscopic imaging allows us to examine the scalp and hair follicles under high magnification. This technology can help us evaluate details that may not be visible to the naked eye and provides a useful baseline for monitoring changes and progress over time.
Trichologists do not diagnose medical conditions. We evaluate the scalp and hair, recognize patterns, and identify factors that may warrant additional investigation. When appropriate, we may recommend bloodwork, medical evaluation, or collaboration with an appropriate provider.
Please bring or be prepared to discuss your current medications and supplements, relevant medical history, recent bloodwork if available, hair and scalp products, previous hair-loss treatments, when you first noticed changes, major health or stress-related changes, and your goals and concerns.

Regrow: Natural Hair Restoration

In some cases, natural hair growth may be supported, particularly when follicles remain active and contributing factors can be addressed. Your potential for improvement depends on the type and progression of hair loss, follicle condition, scalp health, genetics, overall health, and consistency with the recommended plan. No ethical provider can guarantee regrowth. Following your evaluation, we will give you an honest assessment of whether Regrow appears to be an appropriate path.
Depending on your evaluation, a personalized program may include professional scalp preparation and detoxification, exosome therapy, growth factor therapy, Low-Level Laser Therapy, targeted professional home care, nutritional or supplement support, lifestyle recommendations, medical collaboration when appropriate, and ongoing progress evaluations. Not every client requires every therapy.
Hair loss is rarely influenced by only one factor, and successful hair restoration is rarely the result of one treatment alone. The goal is not to use more treatments. It is to use the right treatments in the right combination for you.
Hair growth is gradual, and timelines vary. The amount of time needed to observe changes depends on your hair-growth cycle, the type and progression of your hair loss, your scalp and follicle condition, the therapies included in your plan, and how consistently the plan is followed.
No. Hair restoration outcomes vary, and no responsible provider should promise a specific result. We will provide honest guidance and realistic expectations throughout your care.

Restore: Scalp Health & Hair Preservation

No. Restore is appropriate for clients who want to improve scalp health, strengthen existing hair, address scalp discomfort, reduce breakage, or protect the hair they already have.
Restore may be appropriate for dryness, excess oil, itchiness, flaking, product buildup, scalp discomfort or imbalance, hair breakage or fragility, color-related or chemical damage, hair that feels less resilient or manageable, or a desire to maintain healthier hair and scalp function.
The right products can make an important difference, but only when they are matched to the actual needs of your scalp and hair. Many people purchase multiple over-the-counter products based on advertising, social media, or trial and error without knowing whether those products are appropriate. At HVT, products are selected as part of a personalized plan that may also include professional therapies, healthy scalp practices, education, and ongoing support. Healthy hair is not built by one product. It is supported through the right plan.
Depending on your needs, your plan may include advanced scalp analysis and trichoscopic imaging, professional scalp detoxification, hydration and restorative therapies, circulation support, strengthening and density-supporting products, professional home-care recommendations, nutritional support when appropriate, education, progress evaluations, and plan adjustments.

Replace: Non-Surgical Hair Replacement

If regrowth is not possible, is not enough to meet your goals, or is not the path you wish to pursue, you still have options. HVT offers customized non-surgical hair-replacement solutions designed to provide natural-looking coverage, comfort, security, and confidence.
Non-surgical hair replacement uses a customized hair system to add density, cover areas of loss, or replace hair without surgery. Some systems integrate with existing hair, while others provide partial or full coverage.
HVT offers integrated hair toppers, cranial prostheses, and wigs. Each option is selected and customized according to the client’s hair-loss pattern, scalp condition, lifestyle, maintenance preferences, and desired appearance.
HVT uses a specialized open-net integration technique designed to prioritize breathability, comfort, natural movement, and long-term scalp health. Each system is customized using premium 100% European human hair and tailored to your color, density, texture, length, coverage needs, and lifestyle.
Integrated systems may be appropriate for clients who have thinning or diffuse hair loss, want additional volume or density, have enough natural hair to support integration, prefer a secure system that remains in place, and are willing to follow the recommended maintenance schedule. A private consultation is required to determine candidacy.
A cranial prosthesis is a specialized hair-replacement system designed for individuals experiencing medically related hair loss. In some circumstances, insurance reimbursement may be available when the hair loss is medically documented. Coverage varies and cannot be guaranteed.
You do not need to make that decision on your own. During your private consultation, we will discuss your hair-loss pattern, scalp health, existing hair, desired coverage, lifestyle, maintenance preferences, budget, and personal style.
Every system is selected and customized with natural appearance as a priority. Color, texture, density, length, hairline, placement, cut, and styling are considered to help the finished result complement your features and existing hair.
Maintenance depends on the type of system, how it is worn, your lifestyle, and the needs of your natural hair and scalp. Before moving forward, we will explain the maintenance schedule, home-care expectations, and ongoing investment associated with your chosen option.

07

Styling & Cosmetic Enhancement

Yes, but only when the condition of the scalp and natural hair makes extensions an appropriate option. At HVT, extensions are used for cosmetic enhancement, such as adding volume or length. They are not recommended as a way to conceal active or progressive hair loss when doing so could place additional stress on compromised hair.

Getting Started

You do not need to know before contacting us. REGROW may be appropriate when there is an opportunity to support natural hair growth. RESTORE may be appropriate when the priority is scalp health, stronger existing hair, and long-term preservation. REPLACE may be appropriate when you need immediate cosmetic coverage or natural regrowth is not possible, sufficient, or preferred. Some clients may benefit from more than one path over time.
For hair loss, shedding, thinning, or scalp concerns, begin by scheduling a Hair & Scalp Evaluation. For integrated hair systems, cranial prostheses, or wigs, begin by scheduling a Private Hair Replacement Consultation. Every recommendation begins with understanding your story, your scalp, and your goals.
